This dissertation introduces the research and design of the Distributed UAV Automatic Test System (DUATS). This system is designed for the maintenance of a certain type of UAV. The DUATS system is used to mainly test the digital flight control system of the UAV. The DUATS system is based on an RS485 serial communication bus network. Using distributed architecture, it can test a number of UAV flight control systems simultaneously. When testing begins, the computer of the tested UAV flight control system will be connected into the network as a slave. The master of the system will diagnose faults should there be any; otherwise it will set flight parameters and load flight course data for the slave. The first part of this paper deals with the background of the DUATS system development, its task and the research field it involves. After an analysis of the relationship between faults and symptoms, an automatic testing algorithm is given. The dissertation then goes to discuss the general design, the design of the hardware and the distributed network, the software design, with particular emphasis on the two key technologies of the network protocol and the software. A chapter is designated to the fault diagnosis expert system pertaining to the principal software due to its complexity and importance.
