With increasing global market competition and rapidly developing information technologies, how to meet the rapidly changing market has become the crucial issue for the survival and development of the garment manufacture industry. Digital garment development technology is among the major technologies.During present garment design, the three-dimensional effect and fit can be judged only after a sample of the clothing has been finished, which requires trial and error, and results in delay. If technology could implement garment conversion from 2D to 3D, it would provide garment manufacture with the useful technical support.Optimizing the arranging of garment procedure is one key part of digital garment design. Whereas, most garment manufacturers is to depend upon planning technicians to evaluate using their intuition and experience. This makes it more difficult to meet the needs of the rapidly changing market. As a result, optimization of the garment procedure arranging could improve working efficiency and the level of technical performance.The author has studied the digital garment technology based on the theory of computer graphics and virtual garment design technology. On one side, this article researches the methods of garment conversion from 2D to 3D and brings forward a method of virtual stitching based on draping knowledge. In addition, the article discusses a new organization of the garment manufacture process based on genetic algorithms (GA), which could assist the active exploration of digital garment design.The research is carried out focusing on the theme of "problem - theory - application". The main research is as the following:First, the article interprets the concept and method of visual design and manufacture, analyzes its main content and models, and then clarifies the technology of conversion from 2D to 3D as the key for Garment Computer Aided Design. Meanwhile, a particular programme is introduced.Second, after analysing the complicated characteristic of the human bodies and clothes, NURBD curves is selected to build virtual model and pieces. Based on the drapingknowledge, setting human body's 10 major curves as the standard, applying curves interpolation and the OpenGL function, the building of the virtual model and 3D pieces is achieved.Then, combined the garment structure designing technique, this article brings forward a method of virtual stitching based on draping knowledge. By setting anchor points and lines on the virtual model, and introducing the new concept of the conversion of garment pieces' attributes and the middleware~"clothes rack" , the method implements pieces mapping from 2D to 3D and completes the process of virtual stitching.At last, based on the genetic algorithms (GA), a new method researching the optimization of garment procedure arranging is discussed. The result of the simulation proves the method is practical and effective.This article suggests that the technology of garment conversion from 2D to 3D and optimization of the procedure arranging based on GA to be practical plans for applying digital garment technologies.
