Vehicle Location and Navigation System discussed and designed in this paper makes use of Global Positioning System (GPS) for automatic vehicle positioning. Moreover, the system combines with Geography Information System (GIS), including electronic map of main roads networks, can provide navigation information for drivers in real-time.In this paper, a set of software and hardware project is designed to receive the positioning data from GPS successfully, based on the positioning principle of GPS, the characteristics of technology and the project practice. And combined with some knowledge about GIS, a way to implement vector electronic map by MapInfo is put forward. Furthermore, the integration of GPS and GIS is finished in order to transmit and display in real-time the vehicle positioning data in the electronic map.To reduce of the total cost, Vehicle Location and Navigation System designed in this paper chooses a single GPS receiver to position , as a result, the positioning precision of the system is affected. To improve the precision of positioning, a definite algorithm is designed and used to make the signals of GPS and electronic map match, which has greatly improved the qualities of real-time, reliability and precision. In order to make the system perfect, Dijkstra algorithm is adopted in this paper to search the shortest paths for roads networks in the Integrated Mapping Environment, so that the shortest paths towards the destination is created quickly and provide convenience for the drivers.
