English-language newspapers appeared in China over 100 years ago, and Chinese-lunched English-newspapers have had a history of more than 20 years. Prompted by the reform and opening up drive of China, English-language newspapers have recorded a rapid growth over the past two decades. They achieved a lot in both circulation and influential power, and thus more and more became a focus of people's attention.English-language newspapers based in China resort to a running mode that is different from Chinese-language newspapers in the country because of distinct guidelines, contents and readership. They came to establish reporting styles of their own in the long-time practice, and have produced a far-reaching impact upon China's news reporting for overseas services. As a channel of China voice, English-language newspapers, with the content written in English, relatively free reporting and the western-style layout, have a big role in promoting communication of information, mutual exchanges and understanding, and have turned to be the major media in announcing China's opinions and influencing readers in western countries. But we should also know that China's English-language newspapers have not yet completely shaken off the shadow of Chinese-language newspapers, especially those affiliated to the various-level committees of the Communist Party of China, and so have maintained traces of writing styles that are unique to the Party Newspapers. Moreover, English-language newspapers do have problems in targeting precise readership and their international influence remains limited. In order to run English-language newspapers better and bring about more effective communications of Chinese news in overseas regions, therefore, it is a highly important task to conduct a solid research on China's English-language newspapers, to analyze their strength and weakness in disseminating domestic news worldwide and to find ways for future development.
