The component methodology is presently one of the advanced techniques in software development. The application of this methodology will bring good future to the software development, as it is becomes more and more popular. Nowadays, this technique is widely used, as its advantages are obvious. For instance, this methodology avoids duplicated work in developing the same function of a model. The component is reusable and error-free, so cost saving is significant in the testing phase of software development. In addition, its technique in assembling components is a convenient tool for maintaining the software and so on.The objective of this paper is to discuss the component methodology in the world of software engineering. First, I will present a summary of current methodologies in the software development, their advantages and disadvantages. Then I will focus on some basic concepts and applications of COM.Author is particularly interested in the application of the COM todevelop the management information system (MIS). This paper discusses 2 special applications, a frame and a model in MIS engineering, both based on reusable component technique. The paper also discusses in detail the MIS component library, its management, and the reasons for predominance of COM in MIS development. At last, a real world application example is given.Through extensive research and discussion of the COM, I will come to the conclusion that the reusableness is the key technique in component assembly; and that the COM is an effective methodology for the MIS development.
