The relevant energy levels for Erbium and the basic operation principles of Erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) are described. Numerical simulation are used to analyze the relations of pump wavelength, the length of Erbium fiber, pump power on the gain, gain spectra and ASE spectra of the EDFA. Some experimental results are in good agreement with numerical simulation results. These experiment are done on the EDFA which is designed by ourselves.The main characteristics of next intelligent EDFA are analyzed. Base on the analysis and discussion, the relevant methods are proposed and the relevant experiments are done.Based on the simply modifying software, an experiment is designed to reduce the transient by pump control on the EDFA which is designed by ourselves. The output power of the EDFA is keep on the fixed value and the time of transient is decreased. The method is demonstrated to be feasible by the experimental results. Transient control makes it possible to increase or decrease the number the channels without impairing signal integrity.With the equalizing filter made by long period grating(LPG),we design the flat gain spectra of EDFA. Based on the calculation results, the gain spectra of EDFA is flatten and the gain is increased several dB. The calculation results tell us that using equalizing filters made by LPG in fiber amplifiers is a effective way in the gain flattening.We propose a new supervisory scheme for EDFA and discuss some key problems in the scheme. An optical line signal overmodulated by the SV subcarrier is transmitted. The scheme makes supervisory EDFA flexible.It is expected that the EDFA can support the simple network manage protocol (SNMP). This kind of SV system will be quite important for the all-optical networks in the future.
