For compensating the signal loss in long-distance transmission, optic amplifiers have been indispensable in optic communication . Erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) for 1550nm optic communication have gained considerable attention because of their low insertion loss, polarization insensitivity, and large signal bandwidth. However , transient gain saturation of EDFA will affect the amplifier obviously in certain situations. Recovery time is related with transient gain saturation of EDFA. Therefore, the measurement and analysis of recovery time is indispensable. Meanwhile, gain disequilibrium of different wavelengths is harmful to the whole transmission system. Therefore,gain flattening technologies draw great attention gradually.In this paper, my main research points are as flows:(1) The primary features , the characteristics and advantage of EDFA is expatiated.(2) The development of a EDFA system , including solutions during circuit designing and debugging , the combination and the performance of the system is presented.(3) The procedure of measurement experiment of EDFA recovery time is described carefully.The effect of transient gain saturation of EDFA on the amplifier is presented, and the improvement is also proposed.(4) Several gain flattening technologies are introduced in this thesis.The results of this paper are valuable to EDFA research and design in fiber optic communication .
