The work presented in this dissertation involves two types of enterprise managem system,i.e. the traditional Management Information System (MIS) and more advanced Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system. The dissertation is backed up by the experience gained in the system development for the San-ying Textile Ltd. in Zhuhai. The system developed was originally modeled as an MIS,constrained by the contract, which is operational but needs further rethinking. The main part of this dissertation is devoted to the improvement of the existing system with the ERP with provisioning of a framework for the San-ying Textile Ltd. ERP system. In order to explain the necessity of introduction of the ERP,a brief description to the San-ying MIS is presented and the inadequacy of the system is also analyzed. For further discussion, the background, the basics and advantages of the ERP are explained in some detail. The contribution to the improvement of original system presented in the thesis can be summarized as:A- Provision with a framework of the further San-ying ERP system, which isformed of 10 sub-systems,namely,production,planning,accounting,humanpower resources, production equipment, stocks, sales, supply,DSS (DecisionSupport System),and system maintenance and management.B. Refinement to subsystems:provision with functional modules and data flow diagrams.C. Refinement to the Decision Support Sub-system including a schema for its data warehouse.D. Provisioning with a program implementation for two sub-systems (sales and production management),to demonstrate the system integration issues.E. A few advanced techniques being adopted in the system design and implementation:3-tier architecture,groupware,middle-ware.The author has been convinced, through the preliminary development practice, that the ERP system is superior to the original MIS in enterprise management, though there is still much work to be done.
