A Content Analysis Of Female Status In Newspaper Photos After The Cultural Revolutionary

This thesis aims at a thorough analysis of the female status exhibited in Chinese newspaper photos after the Cultural Revolution. The author encodes a total of 3425 photos selected from China Youth Daily published from 1978 Oct. to 2001 Dec. and processed the data in SPSS 10. The author found that the female status exhibited in Chinese newspaper photos has been deteriorating not only in quantity but also in its prominence. The author also attempts to explain the reason for this trend and concludes that it is the adoption of market economy,which has resulted in great political,economical and cultural impacts on the Chinese society,that brought the change.In the author's opinions,the value of this paper lies primarily in the methodology it adopts. It was hoped that this paper will serve as a pioneer in this field and bring better works to the Chinese visual communication research.
