An expert system for the security of alkali-aggregate reaction in concrete engineering (CAARES) is designed and implemented in this paper. The system contains such content as computer aided design of concrete construction, alkali-aggregate reaction estimation, literature search, etc.A useful modal (AIEXPERT) is constructed in object-oriented programming language according to requirements of the design. This modal is mainly based on production rule, which combines representation and reasoning of predication and procedureOn the basis of object-oriented knowledge representation, the model supports proposition object, predication object and procedure object as basic elements of production rule. AIEXPERT provides a good interface on knowledge representation, which can express some complex knowledge. It encapsulates several kernel components of expert system, such as knowledge base and Inference Engine. Its reasoning system combines rule inference and procedure compute, and integrates both qualitative analysis and quantitative calculate well.By using this model, CAARES solves such problems as diagnosis, design and predicting involved in the system effectively. It is proved in practice that AIEXPERT can help to improve the efficiency of the research and development of expert system.
