With the development of network technology and database technology, the sharing of database information in Internet and Intranet is more and more urgent. But the database information has comprehensive heterogeneity. Furthermore, the heterogeneity of hardware platform, the heterogeneity of operating system and the heterogeneity of network increase the problems of heterogeneity. Problems of heterogeneity hold back the sharing of database information. Therefore, how to connect the heterogeneous databases and share their information becomes a focal problem.Integrated system of databases aims at shielding the heterogeneity of database management systems, operation systems, platforms and base networks and combining the heterogeneous databases into a global logical database. The global logical database is uniform and transparent to the user and can be accessed by different data processing languages by the user. Therefore, the heterogeneous database information and hardware resources can be shared.In this paper, A lot of technical theses are referenced and many existing integrated systems of heterogeneous databases are analyzed. Then principles of an integrated system of heterogeneous databases are analyzed, the architecture and the function of the system are devised. The integrated system of heterogeneous databases designed in this paper has a three-tiered architecture, the middle tier of the system introduces a distributed object technology CORBA, and CORBA is the supporting environment of the system. Designing the integrated system of heterogeneous databases based on CORBA promotes the co-operation of developer, lowers the developing cost, and improves the manageability, the maintainability, the flexibility and the reliability of the system. Furthermore, many crucial techniques are resolved during the completing of the system, such as definition of the IDL interface, schematic heterogeneity resolution, query processing and transaction management. In this paper, an integrated system of heterogeneous databases is analyzed, designed, and realized using OOD method.
