With the development of computer science and technology as well as their applications, it is more vital day by day for DBMS to process multimedia data (such as video, audio. etc). The data model of traditional DBMS can not efficiently present multimedia data because of the characteristics of multimedia data. Though successful in the commerce market, the DBMS is not suitable to process multimedia data. In order to process multimedia data effectively, it is essential to establish a multimedia model that can describe multimedia data, and then Multimedia Database Management System (MDBMS) which is based on multimedia model.In recent years, many famous Chinese and oversea scholars put forward some data model about the research of multimedia data model, which is always important work in the field of database. However, little work is canied out in the research of fundamental theory of multimedia data. In this paper, we put forward, from the point of mathematics, Multimedia-Instance Model, which can describe all kinds of multimedia data. First we give the conception of Multimedia-Instance Model, which consist of 7-tuplemi(S, F, A, a, fi, SV, FJ'9,where S is a set of states, which captures a certain structure to store information. F is a set of features, which presents pieces of information of given states, A is a map from Sto 2'. a' is a set of feature-state relations on 2F XS, which reflects the relation between characteristics of state, fi is a set of relations defined on S. which reflects the relation between states. SV is a set of state variables ranging over states, FV is a set of feature ~'ariables ranging over features. We gi~'e some examples to demonstrate how the Multimedia-Instance Model describes multimedia data. At the same time, we show how to present other multimedia instances h~ MIM, which occur during applications. Query language is one of the most important characteristics of DBMS as well as the vital basis for judging whether a DBMS is successful or not. In order to query' the data in multimedia database, we present logical query lancuaee based on Multimedia-Instance Model and demonstrate the applications of the logical query language by some examples. Based on Multimedia-Instance Model. we establish the data store structure, which can access multimedia information at high speed and show its applications through given examples. We also give some query processing algorithms for all kinds of queries. The update operation algorithm of Multimedia-Instance Model is carried out to show the change of information in database. It is necessary for different media to combine harmoniously together to accomplish significant data flow during applications. We also put forward the conceptions of media event and multimedia presentation in this paper.
