With the development and progress of the modem society, city transportation plays a more and more important role in the social and economic affaires. The main subject focused here is to apply the theory and methods of Cellular Automata to the field of the simulation and research of the modeling of city transportation system, which possess the capability to perform large scaled real-time simulation. The main contents and results are as follows.In this thesis an idea of modeling and simulating city transportation system, based on assembled cellular automata modules, is proposed. Considered as the sub-system of city transportation system, every module has independent function mechanism and the communication capability with other modules.The NS model, the basic one-dimensional cellular automata model of city highway, is used to perform some simulation of the single-lane road, learning the character of single-lane traffic. Then two modifications are added to the NS model, aiming to make the model more realistic as the real traffic.The model of two-way single-lane crossing / node is built, taking the internal dynamics of the crossing into account, which usually neglected for simplification. But sometimes the internal dynamics of the cross play a more important role than the links in traffic systems. And two functions of traffic light are performed and discussed.A simplified traffic net around Olympic Park is built, based on above methods. And the results of simulation prove the capability of the cellular automata modules on simulating city transportation systems.
