| With the accelerate growth of the mobile communication, antenna performance has a more and more important status in the communication system. Now, smart antenna system has being developed for the Third Generation Mobile Communication (3G). Smart technology must be applied to not only base-stations but also mobile terminals. So, the electromagnetic characteristics of mobile terminal antenna attract more and more attention.In this article, we mainly analyze the electromagnetic characteristics of mobile terminal antenna and develop a software for electromagnetic simulation. In chapter 1, the development and status of mobile terminal antenna system are summarized. In chapter 2, the basic technology for mobile terminal antenna system is introduced. Chapter 3 illustrates the electromagnetic characteristics of the diversity antenna system for handset. Chapter 4 presents a method of the main beam scanning by multi-feed, and analyzes the scanning properties of both planar antenna and twomonopole antenna for handset. In the last chapter. the fbnction and usage of electromagnetic simulation software are presented.
