In this paper, a system of Automatic Vehicle Identification and Classification (AVIC) based on Image processing is presented after methods of AVIC have been analyzed and concluded. The AVIC framework and working flow has been explained and the image processing device used in this system CCD camera and image capture card is selected. The Robinson edge detection operator based on mask matching is improved faster and used to dispose the vehicle image to get the vehicle's gray edge image in this paper. Through the Image morphology filtering, the noise points in the two-value image have been erased. The vehicle's length and width are calculated by the projection method. With the geometric classification method of pattern recognition, a classifier based on the vehicle's length and width is carried out. The result shows, through the AVIC system we designed, the edge of the vehicle is detected rapidly and the vehicle's size parameters are calculated correctly, then the vehicle's type is gained, which satisfies the requests of the AVIC system.
