With the fast development of transportation, more and more attention has been paid onto the proficiency problems of related facilities.Automatic vehicle identification based on videos and still images, with its advantages in image retrieval and system installation, seems to be an extremely useful method to solve these problems, and thus appeals to many people.The highway toll system is an important component of the highway management syetem and intelligent transportation system. With the development of the highway network and the increment of the automotive, the highway toll system faces great challenges. Image processing technology is intuduced in this paper to improve the efficiency of the toll system and prevent any cheat. Key technologies such as image processing and pattern recognition are intensively studied in this paper. Such research would be very valuable bith in academic and practical areas.The vehicles tyle and the license platere cognition system is the important part of the system of the automatic charging in speed way toll stations. Based on the technology of recognizing images and characters, the vehicle style and license plate recognition system is one of the focused researches on the application of pattern recognition home and abroad. In this thesis, we present an automatic vehicle identifications ystem based on still images. From the following parts: location of the vehicle,car typeientification, extraction of the license plate, location of the characters and optical character recognition, the thesis explained respectively the critical technologies used in the system. It also provided some new algorithms about correction of the errant characters' locations. At the end of the thesis we set examples about our identification result, to certify the proficiency of the whole system. Number plate recognition is mainly studied in this paper, which includes image acquisition, number plate location, character segmengtation and character recognition. By improvement and optimization in practice, the experimental reseals are satisfactory.
