Great changes have taken place in theory and practice of foreign language teaching over the last twenty years.These changes have resulted in the development of educational theories and technology,of the way we think about foreign language and learning,and efficiency of second language learning.As the focus of research shifts from teaching to learning,more and more attention is paid to the individual language learner.Learning to read is crucial for every student,since the acquisition of the reading skills opens up new possibilities for exploring the world and communicating with others.Furthermore,in language tests inside or outside China, reading comprehension takes a high proportion,which indicates that reading ability is a reliable criterion upon which to test the learners' language level.This thesis consists of five chapters.Chapter1 discusses the mode of the teaching English reading that has been practices all these years and the problems that have been found in it,and analyzes the problems.It then presents the author's plan to solve these problems by training the students to use reading strategies.Chapter 2 is a literature review, which discusses the theories on which learning and reading strategies are based.In Chapter 3,which is the most important part of the thesis,the author makes a detailed plan for conducting the action research on the training of the students to use reading strategies in senior high schools.The author keeps a record of the whole research process and describes each process in detail by using such data-collecting methods as questionnaires and interviews,and modifies her research plan properly during the process.Chapter 4 summarizes the effect on the students the research produced. This research,based on the theories of second language acquisition,reveals that a training of the students to use reading strategies in senior high schools has positive effect on both teachers and students.It raised the students' interest in their learning of English, and considerably improved their language proficiency.It also helps the teacher to reconsider their teaching methods and consciously improve them.
