Soon after reform and opening up, with all-round development of the society, mass culture sprang up. It is inevitable during the process of modernization, which has great impact on China and is becoming the pop culture in our society. It is the educational environment that college ideological and political education cannot avoid. The contents of mass culture have penetrated into the daily life of college students, and the manifestation of mass culture has become the media in their communication and study. All above mentioned is part of their life, so the influence of mass culture on college ideological and political education cannot be neglected. It is significant that study of college ideological and political education on the background of mass culture to enhance the effect of college ideological and political education. This thesis focuses on the consistency and conflict between mass culture and college ideological and political education, as well as the positive influence and negative influence on the latter by mass culture, and proposes advice for college ideological and political education innovation on a background of mass culture. All these are based on a clear understanding of the conception, nature, function and historical position of mass culture.It contains three main sections. The first part is summary of mass culture. The consistency and contradiction of the two has been studied firstly. In addition, both opportunity and challenge on college ideological and political education by mass culture have been emphasized in this part. The analysis of both positive and negative influence of mass culture on college ideological and political education could help the latter to exert its advantages, avoid the disadvantages, and to serve the latter with the favorable elements. The third part is college ideological and political education innovation on the background of mass culture. Based on a well-understanding of the dual nature of mass culture, this section concentrates on the new approaches and new methods of college ideological and political education in a new environment. For innovation, the thesis proposes several suggestions, from education conception, education system and education contents to education methods.In a word, the rise of mass culture is an inevitable cultural environment which college ideological political education has to face currently, and during the modernization process of college ideological political education, mass culture environment must be treated cautiously. We should make full use of mass culture as a cultural source, hold the dominating point, search for the stand of college ideological political education, and initiate new prospects in the new circumstance.
