On Social Responsibilities Of Chinese Universities

The universities' social responsibility, social function and social mission are always the permanent topic in the philosophy of higher education. In the era of Knowledge Economy, the universities' status and missions of human society have changed a lot; they are stepping into the center of the stage and under the interactive condition with the society. In this context, traditional value of the university's responsibility has become parochial and conservative, universities are required to take on the era responsibilities and re-recognize the social responsibilities. The Universities' development demands understanding and supporting from society, thereby the whole society needs to recognize the universities' social responsibility correctly. It's very important to the university's development, but also has great significance to the nation and the society. Our country's universities especially these top-rankings must be aware of historical missions and actions on the country and nation's prosperity and flourishing. At the same time, Chinese universities should be more intellect to adapt the society and future development, should have more courage and wisdom to meet the challenges in the near future.This dissertation examines the theoretical and practical significances of the research, it also surveys the related research and demonstrates the meanings and characteristics of the university's social responsibility in order to show reasons and significances of taking social responsibilities, then makes a detailed description of the social responsibilities based on diverse ideas of university. Chinese university's social responsibility is the main research subject of this paper. Based on the history of Chinese higher education, the third chapter analyzes the social responsibilities in history and the interpretation of reality. Focusing on the era theme of establishing an innovative nation, human resource and higher education great power, the paper advanced how could Chinese universities hold the pulse of the times development, face to both opportunities and challenges to have sustainable development power by serving the country and society. The paper attempts to point out which social responsibilities should Chinese universities undertake and their performance, analyzes some relationships between academic freedom and social responsibility, the basic research and applied research, short-term social demands and long-term development of the university. Finally, the paper raises rational choices of Chinese universities which can be concluded as educating students to take responsibility for our nation, enhancing the country's creativity and competitive power, while leading the future of Chinese society.
