Local colleges or universities in China are confronted with fierce competition both from the market and the other institutions of higher learning at the same level. In order to win the competition, they need to come up with some strategies taking advantage of their own characteristics. In view of this, the present paper defines the notion of core competence, analyses the characterisitics of local colleges and universities as well as the status quo of their competitivity, pointing out that the core comptentence lies in the shaping of the image and the increase of competitivity. As a result of the study, the present author proposes some tentative strategies aimed to improve the core competence in discussion.
