The 21st century is knowledge and globalization age, and a new age for nationwide study, lifelong study, active study and comprehensive study. It is the call of the Central Committee of the Party to construct"a study-oriented society characterized by comprehensive study and lifelong study"under the new historic times. Therefore, as the fundamental education of the nationals in the new century, it is the key of the education to develop students'self-study ability and help them to master learning methods. To make students master the basic methods of learning Chinese and develop good habit of learning Chinese is stipulated in The Standardization for Compulsory Full-time Schooling for Chinese Class. This task is especially important in the teaching of Chinese in junior middle schools because this period is a transitional period to students, i.e. transiting from"whole assistance"study in primary schools to self-directed study in high schools and colleges. During her own teaching process, the author tried to develop students'self-directed study ability, tap their intelligent resources, foster their creativity and perfect their personality to make them adapt to the society.In order to accomplish the task of changing students'study methods in the reform of disciplines, two questions must be clarified. What is active study and study with personality? What principles must teachers follow and what tactics must teachers adopt to instruct students to study? Based on the research on the self-directed study at home and abroad and starting from the characteristics of Chinese course, the paper indicates that we should use the methods which are beneficial to promote the self-directed study in the traditional Chinese learning concept for reference; we should make students be interested in Chinese and have lasting motivation; students should cultivate good habit of learning Chinese; teachers should train their abilities of listening, speaking, reading and writing; we should makes efforts on the blank in research in China, i.e. the improvement of self-efficiency and self-adjusting study mode; we should make students having following abilities, i.e. clear subject consciousness, exploiting and creativity, self-examination and adjusting.First, the paper expounds the developing of junior middle school students'self-directed study ability and the ability of learning Chinese in a self-taught way; second, the paper discusses the principle of developing the ability of learning Chinese in a self-directed way and expounds the role of following principles playing in the self-directed study, i.e. students'main position principle, teachers'guiding principle and exploring principle. In the third part, to increase the efficiency of paper, the paper discusses the implementing tactic used by the author in the teaching for developing the Chinese self-directed study and is expected to be helpful to those teachers who teach Chinese.The studying methods adopted by the paper include investigating, monographic study, phased summary and summarizing experiences.
