| "People oriented" or "people first" principle is a conception of modern management. It comes along with the development of the times, and reflects people's re-assessment of their own value and the promotion of their own position. The essence of practicing "people oriented" teaching management is to highlight the importance of both teachers and students, respecting them and giving full play to their roles. So The "people oriented" teaching management, instead of being a specific management pattern, goes through the whole process of a teaching management activity. It is guided by the ultimate goals of the institution, based on the self-management of individuals and lays stress on the individuals' comprehensive development. As a result of advocating self-management, teachers and students will be able to regulate themselves, develop themselves in an all-round way, and eventually bring about the co-development of both the institution and themselves. The essay first analyses the major manifestations of the traditional university teaching management characterized with inadequate emphasis on people's initiative - students' lack of both the freedom and the right to make their own decisions concerning their studies; teachers' lack of the opportunities to participate in the teaching management; the administrative management pattern being introduced and over-stressed in teaching management; the lack of democracy. Next, it illustrates the main reasons for the inadequate humanization in university teaching management - outmoded teaching ideologies, the lack of teaching resources, a rigid way of macro-management. Then, the essay introduces the four key elements for setting up the "people oriented" university teaching management---the president of the university, the teachers, the students, the university culture. Finally, the essay points out that 1)to advocate the "people first" concept and to strengthen the construction of teaching resources is the precondition for carrying out "people oriented" teaching management; 2)to put the students' development first means to pay respect to the objective regularity of both their physical and mental development, their psychological needs, the discrepancy of their personalities, and their right of choice, and to establish equal teacher-student relationship, to ensure all the students have the chance to experience appreciation and success which is necessary for the their comprehensive development; 3)to put the teacher's development first means to respect them, to trust them, to give full play to their initiatives, and to push forward their professional development; 4)to foster favorable spiritual culture, institutional culture, behavior culture, and material culture of the university are the essential guarantees for carrying out "people oriented" teaching management. The essay, taking the reform of the undergraduates-targeted teaching management of Southwest University as an example, discusses about the application of the "people oriented" teaching management conception in the actual teaching management of the university. It is the author's hope that by studying the theory and generalizing the application of the theory in practice, the "people oriented" teaching management theory will be fully implemented and embodied in the teaching management practice, and consequently, the teaching management of the institution of higher education will, in the real sense of the word, be conducive to the comprehensive development of both teachers and students. |
