The Study Of Development Of Independent Institutes In American Research Universities

With the development of science and technology, the disciplinary has been transformed from the traditional specialization to the interdisciplinary. Nowadays interdisciplinary researches are popularly applied to both technological and social problems. We consider the independent institutes as the effective measures to facilitate the interdisciplinary, the most important base of the matrix mechanism, and the vital approach to enhance innovation ability of universities.This thesis focuses on interdisciplinary researches in the United States with quality and quantity analysis to study the scale and management of independent institutes. Based on the case-study, these experiences and ideas will serve future roadmap for research universities in China.The study primarily works on the scale of independent institutes by comparing to other institutes and it states that one third of interdisciplinary institutes are independent institutes. Further case study finds out that those independent institutes in American universities have possessed of state-of-the-art mechanism on the talent construction, funds resources, policy support, facilities and etc. Compared with its counterparts in China, the exploration has already been on the way, but is not yet sufficiently complete. The final part provides some advice on how to facilitate independent institutes'development in Chinese research universities, involving with innovating organization, broadening the cooperation areas and so on.
