Up to date, a lot of English educators and English teachers have written much about English underachievers. But most of them study more about the subjective elements than objective elements, which lead to the underachievement of the students in learning English, even less in the guide of society, educational system, evaluation methods, textbooks, teachers and studying environments. So this paper does a research into the reasons why some students in a key high school become the English underachievers, and demonstrates the roles that the elements mentioned above play in the English studies. The research aims at making the wide educators, especially the English teachers in high schools clear about the reasons that the English underachievers appear, so that they will be paid more attention to and cared for. In addition, the essay can provide some suggestions and help in reducing the number of English underachievers as well as upgrading English underachievers. The essay can also be reference for English teachers of kindergarten, primary school and junior middle school. The writer hopes to make some contributions to the English teaching in our country by doing this.The essay is made up of 6 chapters. Chapter 1 is an introduction, which demonstrates the significance and the value of the research. Chapter 2 introduces some theories at home and abroad about definitions and characteristics of the English underachievers. The educators definite the English underachievers quite differently. But generally speaking, the English underachievers refer to the students who are normal in intelligence, but for different reasons, they can not adapt themselves to the studying life in normal schools, which leads them to have some learning disabilities. But this kind of learning disabilities can be or almost can be reversed by education. The essay summarizes the characteristics of the English underachievers: detraction of mind; weakness of controlling oneself; no interest in English studies; improper learning strategies; low grades in exams. Chapter 3 is a questionaire about the English underachievers in key schools.360 English underachievers in Grade 1 in Jilin Yuwen High school will be inquired, so that the reasons why some students become disabled in learning English are understood. Chater 4 analyzes the data of the research, and summarizes the subjective and objective reasons why some students in key schools become English underachievers .Chapter 5 puts forward some advice about how to reduce the number of English underachievers and how to upgrade them. Chapter 6 is the conclusion. Some shortcomings and innovation of the research are pointed out.
