The Phonics is a mainly-used phonology teaching method which emphasizes the letter-sound correspondence in the English-speaking countries.It can help English underachievers know the letter-sound correspondence and combine the pronunciation with spelling of the words together to improve the efficiency of studying and memorizing them.At the same time,it can also make use of the positive transfer of Chinese Pinyin instead of the mechanical way of memorizing English words.The International Phonetic Alphabet is a method which is widely used in English teaching in our country.And the way which students use to memorize words is to read or write letter by letter again and again.Of course,it is useful in primary stage of English learning.However,students will learn more and more difficult words as time goes by.There is no doubt that the way of learning English will increase students' burden and make them lose their interests as well as their passion in learning English in the end.By making use of the phonics and the international phonetic alphabet method,English underachievers can not only memorize the vocabularies more easily and lessen their burden of study,but also improve their self-confidence in learning English as well as increasing their interests in it.This paper is aimed to explore the effects of the Phonics in teaching English underachievers' vocabulary in senior high school.At first,three questions are raised:Can the Phonics teaching cultivate English underachievers' phonological awareness?Can the Phonics teaching improve English underachievers' abilities of pronunciation and spelling? Can the Phonics teaching improve English underachievers' interests in learning English? The educational experiment lasted two months.After that,the author made analysis on results from the qualitative research and the quantitative research such as documents,observing,questionnaire,tests,teaching experiments and interview.The results are as follows: The Phonics teaching can cultivate English underachievers' phonological awareness.The Phonics teaching can improve English underachievers' abilities of pronunciation and spelling.The Phonics teaching canimprove English underachievers' interests in learning English.In this way,the author holds the opinion that the Phonics can promote the English underachievers' learning of vocabularies.In English teaching,teachers can combine the Phonics teaching with the International Phonetic Alphabet teaching to promote English underachievers' English learning and increase their interests in the English.
