"Curricular criteria " was published in 2003,which requires that the basic task of English teaching in Senior Middle schools is to cultivate the English ability in language skills, language knowledge, learning attitudes, learning strategies and cultural awareness. Thus, various reforms in English language teaching and learning have been taken in various aspects. With the development of the curricular reform, much attention has been focused on how to improve the learner's learning strategy ,as to learner's learning motivation, little has been studied, especially in the stage of Senior Middle schools. With the influence of the entrance examination to college, for a long time, our English teaching has accepted and practiced the teaching method which is based on the theory of structuralism, which emphasizes on the cognition of the structure. More attention has been paid to the knowledge recognition such as vocabulary, grammatical rules, while the cultural context of the target language is ignored. As a result, some students purposely pursue the "so-called" effective learning strategies and ignore their own language level and ability, leading to slight improvement in their English; meanwhile, the traditional teaching method can not satisfy students' further desire for English learning, thus holding back their further learning motivation in English and reduces their interest in English learning. So, this paper attempts to develop School—based curriculum course, that is, adapted English literature to solve the problem. At the beginning of the thesis, an interview and a questionnaire were conducted at Zhongxiang High School so as to know the existing situation of culture teaching and learning.Second, the thesis refers to related achievements about culture and language, and learning motivation to seek out the theoretical basis, and states that literature teaching should become an integrated part in English teaching and it is the key factor to create, foster and maintain learner's English learning motivation.Third, through the practice, the thesis tries to create, foster and maintain learner's English learning motivation by guiding students to read the adapted English literature and comes to the conclusion that reading the adapted English literature to some extent helps students develop both their language competence and learning motivation. Finally, the thesis offers suggestions concerning the problems revealed in the experiment.
