The present study empirically investigates the English learning motivation and related problems of Luohe Foreign Language Middle School students in the English teaching and learning environment. The aim of the study is investigating the motive tendency of the junior one students in learning English, different classroom performance and behavior of different motivation holders, and problems in English learning. The researcher analyzed the causes of the problems and provided some useful implications.There are mainly four research questions:(1) What are the main types of motivation influencing junior one students’ English learning in Luohe Foreign Language Middle School?(2) How do different types of English learning motivation influence the students’ homework performance?(3) What are the differences of students’behavior in English classes among students of different motivation types?(4) From the teachers’ view, what are the problems of junior one students in learning English and what teaching methods they usually use to motivate students?The approach adopted in the study is a combination of quantitative research and qualitative research. The specific methods are a questionnaire, classroom observations and interviews. The present study is a case study:one normal class of60students is selected as the subjects of the study. According to the results of the questionnaire investigation, the researcher selected four students with different motivation types and conducted one week’s classroom observation on them, and then interviewed two English teachers.The major findings of the study are:(1) the majority of junior one students learn English for self-perfection, utility value and responsibility.(2) there is a positive correlation between three subtypes of motivation and homework performance.(3) the students with different motives have different classroom behaviors, which is mainly reflected in four aspects:answering the questions, their physical responses, group activities and note taking.(4) the biggest problems of junior one students are weak foundation and bad learning habits. Teachers should have a comprehensive understanding of junior one students’learning motivation and adopt useful and proper teaching methods to help students initiate and sustain their English learning motivation. |
