On The Counselor Professionalization And Its Promoting Strategy

"Profession" has long been the goal and self-expectation of most educators. With the high-speed development of higher education, the internal management including students' work has increasingly showed the tendency of being professionalized. Starting from the importance of students' work and the challenge the university's counselor has faced, this thesis holds that to promote professionalization is the efficient way and at the mean time, the trend of the development of university's counselors. Based on the subject, the author then analyzes related theories of being specialized, professionalization, the specialty and professionalization of university counselors; and makes clear the five features a mature specialty should have maintain. The thesis also investigates the standards of professionalized university counselors and the practical significance of them being professionalized, from the perspective of the improvement of social status and practice, which are the two important directions of professionalization, integrated with the connotation and features of the students' work in university. Whereas compared with the corresponding specialty in developed countries, there is still a long way to go for the professionalization of university's counselor in China. The existing problems of the present university's counselors in China are: the lack of higher profession ideal, intensified specialty awareness and strict mechanics of entrance permission; and the lower profession status. All these existing problems have profoundly influenced the professionalization of university's counselor. Therefore, the author analyzes both theoretically and practically the sources of the difficulties in the professionalization of university's counselor, from the perspectives of relative policies, mechanics of university's counselor and the university's counselor themselves. As the professionalization of university's counselor in China is still in the primary stage, we ought to draw on the successful experiences of western universities. The professionalization of students' work in American universities has accomplished by the end of 20th century, which can be told from the development of new professionals, specialized ethnic rules and the development of specialized associations, periodicals and theories of students' work, etc.. And this gives us much inspiration. The difficulties in the professionalization of the university counselors in China being concerned, this author suggests some strategies and ways out, with the purpose of accelerating the professionalization of university counselor in China, which includes intensifying the recognition of students' work, setting up a students' work specialty, strengthening the exploration and training of human resource of university's counselor, and establishing studying-style organizations etc..
