At present, domestic researches on learning motivation(L.M.) have been largely focused on high school students and primary school students, in contrast little on the undergraduates, and less on the poor students(P.S.). Based on those theories about the internal, external and cognitive motivation, this study investigated the characteristics of 526 undergraduates in Nanjing, among of which 197 P.S. were chosen, with a self-designed questionnaire, in order to know about the motivations and the states about P.S.' learning and to provide some objective evidences for the education and study work. Its conclusions are the following:1. Among the seven L.M.s, made up of value of lifetime (V.L.), influence from surrounding (I.S.), development for future (D.F.), service for society and family (S.S.F), status and impression (S.I.), passive treatment (P.T.), and achievement for school work (A.S.W.), the L.M. of development for future is most intense.2. L.M.s of P.S are evidently more intense than those of the non-poor students except the L.M. of S.I.. As for P.S., L.M. of S.S.F is evidently more intense than L.M. of V.L., but it is reverse for the non-poor students.3. For P.S., there is a significant difference from L.M. of S.S.F between majors, and there is a significant interaction effect on L.M. of P.T. between sex and grade, on S.I. and A.S.W between grade and major, on V.L. between sex and original location, on A.S.W between major and original location.4. For P.S., there is a significant difference from L.M. of V.L. between fathers' occupations, of S.S.F. between fathers' elementary school's diploma and middle school's diploma, between fathers' elementary school's diploma and high school's diploma, of P.T. between mothers' elementary school's...
