The nature of language is a communicative tool, so the ultimate goal of foreign language teaching is to cultivate students'communicative ability. In the time of economic globalization, China is badly in need of those talented people with solid speciality knowledge and high-level communicative competence.Speaking, as one aspect of communicative competence, is the skill that the students will be judged upon most in real-life situations. Therefore, we teachers have a responsibility to improve students'oral proficiency. An investigation on senior students'current oral English level in our school shows that due to the continual rigid examination system in China, most English teachers are still focusing their attention mainly on the mastery on the grammar and vocabulary whereas the development of learners'speaking abilities are largely ignored. Teachers lack effective teaching methods to improve students'spoken English level.Task-based teaching has been advocated by the new English Curriculum Standard issued by the Ministry of Education, which proceeds from the interest, the experience, and the cognitive development level of students, proposing using the learning methods and teaching approach based on participation, cooperation and communication to develop the students'ability to use the language, turning the learning process into one in which students form the positive emotion, active thinking, brave practice, and learning autonomy. The author used such methods as experiment, survey, analysis and searching for documents to do some research on the application of task-based teaching in senior students'oral English teaching. This thesis expounds the essence, theory basis, feasibility and advantages of task-based teaching. And the author also put forward some opinions on how to design and implement the tasks reasonably, arising from teaching practice. The experiment lasts for one year and includes two stages, the final result proves task-based teaching is much easier to arouse students'enthusiasm, bring students'active role into full play. Task-based teaching follows the law of language acquisition and is indeed an effective way to improve students'oral proficiency.
