The publication of Essentials of the Elementary Curriculum Reform (Proposed Essentials) and the spread of The National Curriculum Standards announce the coming of a new era of the elementary curriculum reform in China. The introduction of a new teaching concept, that is, the inquiry teaching, to the elementary curriculum reform immediately attracts a considerable interest of the educational theorists and at once the teachers in the primary schools as well as in the high schools. However, due to various reasons, the inquiry teaching has not been carried out in the rural areas smoothly. Therefore, this thesis aims at the spread of the inquiry teaching of geography for the junior high school students in the rural areas. On the basis of the questionnaire conducted by the geographical teachers and students in the rural areas, the author synthesizes literature review, theoretical preliminaries and case study to analyse the status quo and the existing problems of the inquiry teaching in the rural areas. Meantime, the author makes a thorough investigation into the inquiry teaching goals of geography for the junior high school students in the rural areas, the inquiry teaching basic processes, activity designs and the implement strategies of the inquiry teaching according to the practical situation in the rural areas in connection with the relevant theories.This thesis consists of the following eight chapters.Chapter One: Introduction.
