It has been more than one hundred years since private middle schools came into being in China. The prosperity and decline of them shows the hard times that Chinese modern education experienced during the period of semi-colonial and semi-fudal society. The study mainly researches the practice of running private schools in Guang Feng county. It illustrates systematically the history of running private schools in Guang Feng county before the Republic of China, during the Republic of China and today from the perspective of historical inheritance. This research of Shang Jiang Middle School serves as a case study to understand the general picture of the private schools in Guang Feng county during the Republic of China in five aspects: (1). the settlement of the contradictions between the lack of money and the development of schools; (2). the renewal and maintenance of "seeking the truth" and "developing moral character"; (3). trying to find a solution to the combination of the systematical management and humanistic management; (4). The effort to form a group of teachers of high qualities; (5). the vigour to the private schools brought by characteristic edcation. This study of the private schools in Guang Feng county during the Republic of China is based on Chinese modern education from the macro-aspect, and thus reveals the hard times that Chinese modern education experienced. Meanwhile, from the micro-aspect, this study reseaches on the general situations, causes and practice of running private schools in Guang Feng county during the Republic of China, and brings forth five enlightenments to current private schools: (1). The policies of the government in managing private schools should be encouragement, guidance and service; (2). The system of headmaster in charge of the school is the basis of the management of private schools; (3). Harmonious combination of the systematical management and the humanistic management; (4). Increasing edcational funds; (5). Stablizing the group of teachers of high qualities to upgrate the teaching effects. It is a social problem that draws wide attentions to develop current private schools and to complement each other with public schools under the new situations.
