Higher education massification is the inevitable outcome of social and cultural development in a country. It is an important symbol of social modernization and it is also one of the basic contents of educational modernization. Before we study higher education massification, we first should understand the theory of higher education raised by Professor Martin Trow—the famous American educator and sociologist. This essay expounds the background, the formation and development of his theory. It places emphasis on the main contents of the theory—"the Theory of Period", "the Theory of Model", various educational quality outlooks and current situation of study on the theory home and abroad. At the same time, it makes a comparison between genius education and masses education. It analyzes the features and problems arising with the development of higher education massification in China and then puts forward some suggestions to these problems. It says that educational quality of masses education is a compound concept of different levels. Its criterion is the unity of development, standardization, adapting, serving, and variety. During the period of higher education massification, because more people receive higher education, there is a closer relationship between university and society. The management of university no longer exists only within it. It has the features in the society and on the market. Students, their parents and the society are involved in the evaluation of educational quality directly or indirectly and they effect the development of the university. Therefore, to some extent, whether the students are satisfied or not is the standard to evaluate the educational quality.According to the theory of Professor Martin Trow—the views, purposes, contents, structures, academic standards, functions, forms of establishing education and management systems will change accordingly, the essay analyzes the features effecting educational quality. In the meanwhile, combining the author's working experience, it establishes the controlling model of educational quality during the period of higher education massification. Although it is imperfect, if it can produce some positive effects on higher education massification in China or just in our university, then, the author will feel very happy. |
