Chinese reference books, an essential part of middle school Chinese materials, play an important part in the practical teaching among the teachers, although they appear as the accessories of Chinese textbooks. There is a sharp contrast between the compilers' and users' recognition towards the functions and nature of the Chinese reference books. In the history of the compilation since liberation, the Chinese reference books are mainly organized by the explanatory notes and their focuses are stated according to the knowledge. But there are also some questions, such as simple styles and obsolete ideas, which have a deep negative effect upon the Chinese teaching.The Chinese reference books should be compiled under the directions of modern education ideas and based on the theories of curriculum, linguistics and acknowledge psychology, etc. The stress "how to teach" should be transferred to "what to teach"; while the explanatory model should be transferred to the design model. The core of the compilation should be how to design the Chinese teaching. Through designing, the Chinese education theories should be combined with the teaching practice and the reference books will turn out to be Teachers' Books of Chinese educational practical technology, which consist in rich educational ideas. The teaching designs should be composed of four different aspects, which are series of objective evaluation, method instruction, technological processes and teaching resources. All these series should agree with teaching practice and the learning methods should be implied in the teaching approaches, which will build up a framework of the newest and researching Chinese reference books for middle schools.As for the presentation of the Chinese teaching reference books, there are two types, paper reference books and electronic reference books. In reality the paper reference books play a leading role, yet the effect and impact of the electronic reference books shouldn't be neglected. In the use of the Chinese teaching reference books, there are three orientation, that is, orientation of fidelity, mutual adaptation and enactment. In teaching practice, the fidelity orientation is rather popular with the teachers, while the mutual adaptation orientation tends to be much more reasonable at present.
