Higher vocational education, which has been developing rapidly in recent years, makes up almost half of higher education in China. It aims to train applied and specialized talents who suit the needs of the forefront of production, construction, management and service. Physical education(PE), combining mental and physical activities, can help students cultivate good moral characters as well as will characters, which will promote the all-round development of students'physics and mentality. Higher vocational education should attach more importance on PE. PE teachers, as direct participants and implementers, should enhance their own capabilities so as to fulfill the task of PE. As a PE teacher of a higher vocational college, the author feels that the overall quality of PE teachers leaves too much to be desired. Therefore, it is quite necessary to optimize the team of PE teachers.After analyzing and referring to the precedents'achievements, the author, based on her teaching experience, took PE teachers of higher vocational colleges in mid-Jiangsu as subjects, and made a survey and analysis of their present quality by using literature studies, survey, a logical analysis and some other methods in the research. As a result, there are many factors that hinder the improvement of PE teachers: the subjective factors from the government and the college, as well as the objective factors from the teachers themselves.The conclusions are as follows:1. The overall working ethics of PE teachers of higher vocational college in mid-Jiangsu is comparatively good.2. Their education concepts, to some extent, are out of date.3. Their knowledge leaves too much to be desired.4. Their capability is uneven.5. Their overall mental and physical quality is not good enough.In order to solve the above problems, the author comes up with the following methods of optimization.1. From the aspect of the government: on the one hand, the government should strengthen policies to set up some mechanisms and regulations to enhance PE teachers'quality; on the other hand, the government should strengthen PE discipline construction and increase investment in higher vocational education.2. From the aspect of the higher vocational colleges: the colleges should improve faculty administration, establish platforms for academic exchange as well as monitor the feedbacks about the teachers from the students.3. From the aspect of the teachers themselves: they should change the traditional teaching concepts, cultivate the awareness of life-long study, improve their capability of self-reflection.
