School Based Management (SBM) strategy trainers are educators who help teachers to develop their professional skills.They are qualified professionals who decide,implement and manage SBM affairs in schools. As the importance of SBM training are recognized today, SBM trainers are now playing irreplaceable roles in teacher training.Nonetheless, the importance of SBM trainers does not get enough recognition. The main problems are that most schools lack full-time SBM trainers,and the functions of trainers are not clear, even some trainers are not professional enough. SBM trainers'role ambiguity would lead to following results.On one hand, SBM training would encounter strong resistance from teachers because of its high investment but low returns.On the other hand, due to lack of expertise, little surpport from schools and tremendous work pressure, SBM trainers have no sense of belonging and lack motives to develop. However, in this era of knowledge economy and rapid changes in education, the SBM training has become an important way to professional growth for teachers.Therefore,it is urgent for primary and secondary schools to find the answers to the following questions:Who can be SBM trainers? What roles and duties can SBM trainers undertake?The head/director of research department in primary or secondary school has advantages in undertaking the duties of a SBM trainer.First, research and training are regarded as a fundamental part of professional development of teachers.Many schools have listed training teachers through scientific research as a core part of SBM training.Second, many heads/directors of research departments have had some knowledge and experience of SBM training. Third, the interaction of research and practice is essential for SBM training and the roles of the head/director of research department could help them to improve this kind of interaction. Those who have transferred their own roles from pure research department directors to SBM trainers should take not only their original responsibilities but also the basic functions of SBM trainers,including learning, designing, managing and directing. To sum up, the role of a SBM trainer should be a qualified school-based educator who focuses on promoting professional development of teachers.Due to the lack of knowledge on SBM and the shortage of support from their colleagues,the effects of SBM training sometimes have been weakened.Thus,for those managers of research departments of schools, it is not easy to undertake the roles and duties of SBM trainers.On the path of role transferring, it is important that SBM trainers pursue self improvement,it is also significant that support from external factors. Among them, the government's policy support will play a crucial role.Especially to establish SBM training system is the most vital.In addition, teachers training institutions including universities should contribute more in improving the professional skills of SBM trainers. Admittedly,school itself should be the platform for SBM trainers to grow. To be fully aware of the value of a SBM trainer, and to create favorable condition for a director of research department of school to grow up to a SBM trainer, are the most urgent missions of a school aiming teacher training at SBM. |
