Classical Chinese teaching has always been a hard nut to crack, of which substantive teaching is the most important part. However, such problems as being monotonous and dull and using improper teaching method and so on widely exist in present classical Chinese teaching. Therefore, this paper tries to introduce the original meaning seeking method to the teaching of substantive.Original meaning seeking method is one that uses the theory of Hexateuch to find the original meaning of a word when it's first created according to its form (especially its earliest f orm) and find an example of the use in ancient Chinese classics and archives. This paper focus on the using value of the method and argues that the method is helpful to enhance students' interest in learning classical Chinese, to dig out the cultural implication of Chinese characters and let the students appreciate the amazing fascination of them, to solve the puzzling questions in classical Chinese teaching (the different meanings of a word in ancient and modern times, for instance) and to construct the system of substantives so as to master the meanings of the polysemous words systematically and efficiently. This paper is divided into 5 chapters. Chapterl talks about the importance of substantive teaching. Chapter2 introduces the basis, the contents and the requirements of the application of the method. Chapter3 and 4 talk about the 4 aspects of the using value of the method. Chapter 5 shows the specific application of the method to the general service substantives in classical Chinese.
