Our country's English textbooks went through from translates the foreign country's textbooks to edit our own textbook during the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China.At the beginning of the twentieth century, our country's self-edited English textbooks are in the growing and development time. During the period of the Republic of China, our self- edited English textbooks developed quickly. It went through from translate the foreign country's textbooks to edit our own textbooks. It is very difficult to collect the English textbooks in the period of Republic of China, so there are few of research of this topic. This thesis introduce the basic situation of self-edited English textbooks of junior middle school in the period of the Republic of China in the base of collect the textbooks. And research the textbooks'editorial features and development. The author try to give some advices to the nowadays'English textbooks. This thesis separate into six parts.In the first part, it is the introduction. This part includes meanings of study, situation of study, research starting and research method.In the second part, the basic situation of self-edited English textbooks of junior middle school in the period of the Republic of china. This research separates into two stages, first is from 1912 to 1922,second is from 1922 to 1949.This part introduce the textbooks' object audience, textbooks' Examination and Approval situation, Publishing situation, and textbooks'collected source.In the third part, the shift of self-edited English textbooks of junior middle school in the period of the Republic of china. Firstly, introduce the shift of junior middle school English Curriculum Standard, this aspect to compile textbooks is on the basis of Curriculum Standard. This aspect vertically combs the two stages' junior middle school English Curriculum Standard. The author tries to research the development and evolution of the Curriculum Standard. Secondly, introduce the design's transition of the self-edited English textbooks of junior middle school in the period of the Republic of China. This aspect amplifies the first stage textbooks'prototype. The textbooks design method is mainly base on the translation method in the first stage .In the second stage's the guiding ideology is direct method. The thesis introduces the method of teaching words in the textbooks, the convert of grammar and exercise's design.In the fourth part, the design features of self-edited English textbooks of junior middle school in the period of the Republic of China. This part makes a textual analysis of the textbooks, to summarize the feature of textbook. For instance, the textbook's guidelines are clearly. The contents close to life, and practical. The textbooks pay great attention to citizen's moral training and foreign cultural communication and so on.In the fifth part, draw inspiration from textbooks development to today. With the development of era, new textbooks and old textbooks replace continually, history have certain experience to modern world. In this part, firstly, give some advices to choose the textbook, and some advices of text-books publishing. And then, give some advices of guidelines. We should adjust the evaluation system, if we want to make the design of textbooks accordant with students'body and mental development, and social development. This part also gives some advices of this respect.
