English textbooks are the carrier of curriculum and English teaching. Theyembody of the development and the basic means to realize the training goal as well.English textbooks were published in the turbulent social background in the early middleschool. The publishing of English textbooks has experienced a complex procedure: that’sfrom scratch, introducing the original textbook, compiling by privet school, compiling bypress and approved by the Education Ministry. The compiling of English textbooks alsoexperienced the glory of compiling by non-governmental. English textbook graduallybecome localize and diversified. Therefore, based on the research did by the scholar, it isimportant and meaningful to analyze, compare, summarize the features of the textbooks.The paper will study the development of English curriculum standards and the reformin junior high school. In1912, the government of the Republic of China was founded andthen the government set up the Ministry of Education. The Ministry reformed the secondlyschool education by issuing relative curriculum documents or revising them. With thedevelopment of the curriculum documents, junior high school English textbooks wererevised as well. The revising of the junior high school English textbooks promoted thedevelopment of English teaching in the Republic of China.The study will analyze the sample textbooks through three parts: the microscopic part,the medium part and the microcosmic part. The purpose is to learn the overview of thejunior high school English textbooks in these aspects: textbooks’ structure, the textbooks,the numbers of the plates, the activities, the teaching idea and etc. Thus we can sum up thefeatures of the English textbooks in this period. The features are the following: oriented thecurriculum documents, the structure met the requirement of children’s psychologicaldevelopment, focus switch from western culture to Chinese culture, grammar translationmethods was changed into the direct method, the single textbook to multiple textbooksforms. The textbooks became more scientific.The paper will suggested that the compiling of the English textbooks should absorbthe features of the junior high school English textbooks, such as the extensive use of plates,presenting Chinese and Western culture, publishing the corresponding reading Englishtextbooks. The compiler should combine with the actual students learning English in Chinawhen they compile the English textbooks. Thus the compiling of China’s junior schoolEnglish textbooks can become more scientific and reasonable. What’s more, Englishteachers should know the English curriculum standard well and adjust or make someaddition of deletion of the textbooks according to the change of teaching situation. Theteachers also can choose the corresponding English textbooks according to the learningneeds of students and different levels. At the same time teachers should make full use of relevant English teaching materials to improve students English listening, speaking,reading, writing ability, which will realize the goals of promoting the development of thestudents by learning foreign English.
