With an approaching of consuming society, more influence of film and video media, appearance of internet and never-ending changes of computer graphics, people are depending more on images rather than traditional literacy to know the world. Picturized culture is leading the mainstream culture, as the center of life. With this background, the domain of literature is becoming picturized, and images seem to take the place of literacy to become a mainstream transmission.Chapter 1 Background of picturized literature—'image transferring'and visual culture ageThe picturization of contemporary Chinese literature is transferring of culture, that is,'image transferring'of culture's embodiment in literature domain. Since middle and late 1990s in China, the changes of cultural forms imply'image transferring'has come out and grown continuously, a visual culture age is formalized in a very different way from traditional literal culture. The traditional culture form is more and more critically invaded by image culture. With the background of mass and consuming society, traditional literature is gradually marginalized. Images are occupying existing space of literature. Obviously, compared to literature, the former is more public, moreover, it can transcend the limitation of culture and language, and being consumed more easily in mass daily life. Huge amount of image consumption is the logical development of consuming society and post industrial era. Utilizing image to know the world is the main way in visual culture age, which makes literature, the core of culture, demonstrate picturization. Picturization of literature issues from such a social cultural background.Chapter 2 Technological support to picturization of literature: the development and universalization of electronic mediaThe appearance of picturized literature roots from profound social and cultural background on the one hand, and technological basis on the other, that is, dramatic development and widespread of mass communication especially electronic transmission. The appearance of electronic media is destroying our familiar cultural environment, drawing us from an abstract literary world to a material picture world. The film and video mass occupy mainstream media, leading to a'visual feast'and forming'hegemony of picture'. One of the salient features of visual culture is'hegemony of picture'. Pictures have the greatest transmission value in a popularized and vast entertained society: they are simple, direct-viewing and lively, have visual priority and powerful shocking effect. As far as it is concerned, hegemony of picture originated from picturization objectively causes collapse of traditional elite discursive hegemony, and leads to the crisis of elite discursive literature.Chapter 3 Images carnival: manifestation of picturized literatureWhen literature holds its ground of literacy, it finds a more influential'strategy'than inherent syntax logic in visual culture age: picturization. Through pictures and allying to powerful mass media, literature shows itself in a very untraditional way. In such a consuming era, the requirement of market and customers directs production and circulation of literature, economic rule and market logic take the place of discipline and self-sufficiency of literature. Picture consumption makes all images pan-aesthetics and pan-entertaining, therefore its market potential is undoubted. Literature comes to the public by all kinds of media, however, people have to consider for whether it is still the original literature. Picturization of literature has two vivid domains: one is popularization of picture books including cartoons in traditional publishing industry, the other one is unexpected film and TV series, which are'colonizing'literature.Chapter 4 Impact of picturized literature: redefine the status and functions of literatureIn a map interpretation era, the traditional forms of literature have radically changed. The value and meaning of traditional literature has been eliminated under the impact of images.'Literature death'appears in this condition. Accepting the fact of marginalization of literature in the process of'image transferring'is the premise of correct understanding status and functions of literature in nowadays culture. Material and spiritual scarcity of literature disappears by the impact of electronic media in the visual culture age. Literature is marginalized by film, TV and network and its discursive hegemony is taken place. Even though its function and status lower down by impact of picturized literature, it can not wither away. Even though literature is defeated in'conflict between images and literacy', its spirit can not be demolished. Literature may acquire renascence through a new media given the demanding in society and an opportunity seized.Chapter 5 Mass interests: literature's tropism of aesthetics at visual culture ageVisual culture age is an era that various traditional power shows humble, so literature at this era manifests tropism of aesthetics meeting mass interests.'Tropism of aesthetics meeting mass interests'refers to popularization, entertaining and commercialization of literature. Literature in this age is so universally picturized, which makes it very distinct from traditional literature. Experiencing hypothesis of literariness, the distinctiveness of literature itself and illiterature is vague. Literature is liberated from elite discursive hegemony and pushed to market and public through expanding of'pictures'. Carnival of images should face and satisfy mass during its colonization to literature.
