The 7th pandemic cholera occurred in June,1961 from Indonesia and then spread to Guangdong and the southern part of China (Guangdong, Zhejiang, Fujian, Jiangsu and Shanghai). This epidemic was paracholera epidemic, which spread quickly to Hebei province in 1964 and had a tendency of outbreak with the increasing number of infectious disease cases and deaths. In order to protect life security of people and the smooth development of production, the action of suppressing this epidemic was taken throughout the province. Based on library's archives and the other relevant information, this thesis makes a study on paracholera epidemic in Hebei province with a focus on the analysis of the interaction between the epidemic and society from the perspective of social history of disease. By analyzing the successful experience of then social prevention and control system of epidemics, the present study aims to provide beneficial references to the reform and development of the present social epidemic prevention and control and help cope with emergent events of public health. The whole thesis consists of introduction and five chapters:Introduction is concerned with the definitions of the terms(epidemic, cholera, paracholera, and so on), the situation of academic study, the research methodology and innovation of this study.The first chapter offers an overview of Hebei ecological and social backgrounds and medical and health conditions when the epidemic happened in 1964-1965, including ecological environmental, political, economic, medical and health conditions.Chapter two is devoted to the epidemic situation of paracholera in Hebei, including the overview of the epidemic situation and its temporal and spatial distributionChapter three makes a scientific analysis of the paracholera epidemic from the perspective of cause, the way of spreading and routes of transmissionChapter four makes a preliminary analysis of the interaction between the paracholera and the society, that is to say, the social countermeasures and effects. From the perspectives of government, medical organizations, social communities and ordinary people, the overall social countermeasures at that time are presented. Chapter five provides the enlightenment on coping with emergent events of public health, including the successful experience and weak points.This thesis concludes that the prevention and control of 1964-1965 paracholera epidemic in Hebei province are rather effective and the successful experience gives references to coping with emergent events of public health.
