Stephen King is one of the most important writers in the contemporary American popular literature. The scholars abroad are paying more and more attention to the works of King. But to the mainland academia, the research about his novels still remains rare. This thesis aims to analyze the novel IT through detailed textual studies from the perspective of Archetypal Criticism. The thesis mainly focuses on three categories of archetypal images, the apocalyptic images, the demonic images and the analogical images. Through the archetypal images, King endows his characters with power and social significance, and helps the readers know better of the two opposite worlds, the good and the evil. The world shown in IT is an epitome of the human society, which reveals King's concern about and critical views of the social problems. And the victory of Good winning Evil demonstrates that King still holds a positive attitude towards contemporary human society.
