In recent years,it is inappropriate to define Stephen King only as a horror fiction writer, because a number of his works evince his strong concerns for women’s plights as well as harsh criticism to the American patriarchal society.By exploring American women’s haunting memories and inherited wounds that are imposed by the patriarchal society,King attempts to analyze the true circumstances of different women in the United States with a brand new vision. In his two works,Dolores Claiborne and Big Driver,King explores miscellaneous predicaments of an ordinary housewife Dolores as well as a famous single writer Tess in the United States.Based on feminist theories,by presenting various plights of two protagonists as well as analyzing how they are compelled to transform from hesitation after being violated to unswerving revenge, this paper reveals underlying reasons of taking helpless revenge and proves that gender is the very culprit of women’s predicaments.
