With the increasing cultural exchanges between China and the western world, the translation of biographies of western figures becomes more and more important.Biography, with both historical and literary features,is an effective form to record a person's life and of significant value to research on the change of history and times. After translating the second half of Lisa Rogak's work Haunted Heart: The Life and Times of Stephen King, which is a biography of the world famous thriller writer Stephen King, the translator chooses the most magnificent three chapters as the translation material to be further studied. The translation report, based on Nida's Functional Equivalence Theory, analyses five major issues concluded from the translation of excerpts of the biography,namely,culture-loaded words, idioms and slang, passive voice, long sentences and language style and tries to tackle these issues with appropriate translation strategies under the guidance of Functional Equivalence Theory. The report is divided into four parts: the first part is the task description, including a brief introduction to the source text, language features of the source book, requirements from my supervisor and the publisher for the task as well as the structure of this report. The second part describes the translation process, including pre-translation preparation,while-translating and post-translation quality assessment. The third part is the case study, which is the core of the translation report. This part talks about the appropriate translation strategies and methods adopted to solve the difficulties and problems encountered in the translation process based on theories of functional equivalence. The final part is a summary of the project, including the translation experience, lessons learned and issues to be solved.
