In Jining zone, lots of stones carved in West Han dynasty to the East one remains at present. The time span of their carving should be 400 years or thereabouts; the script types of the carved characters are Zhuan and Li; as for the carving,some at random, and some with refinement. The paper categorizes these stones as carved stones and carved tablets in terms of art products. Carved stones are directly carved ones, whereas the tablets, selective with the raw stones, and with regular procedure:write usually comes first, and the carved scripts strive for keeping the written traces, though the inevitable differences due to both the carving technique and the nature erosion. The paper studies on these two categories of stones, and explores their aesthetics feature. It points out that carved stones is natural and simple,which has been studied since Qing Dynasty and flavored calligraphy works,and the tablets were made prudently both written and carved for practical sake, Zhuan scripts on both are gentle and vigorous, and carved Li scripts, which mostly emerged in Late Han Dynasty, reflects the maturity of the counterpart script, and have a huge variety.The paper highlights on material from practical research, face—to—face with the carved stones,and take the social and regional factors into consideration, furthermore explores the status of these carved stones and tablets in calligraphy in Han dynasty as well as its present significance for calligraphy practicing and research.
