A Comparative Study Of "V Shanqu" And "Vqilai" In Modern Chinese

Based on the theory of Three Linguistic Aspects and a corpus of large scale, this thesis studies the commonness and individuality of"Vshanqu"and"Vqilai", applying the theory of Structuralist Linguistics and Cognitive Linguistics. It compares the specific examples which are difficult to distinguish, and carefully investigates the pragmatic functions of the sentences with these two phrases. There are four parts in this thesis.Chapterâ… investigates the phrase of"Vshangqu"from the aspects of syntax, semantics and pragmatics. In the aspect of syntax, it mainly studies the elements of the sentence which"Vshangqu"can be and the characteristics and categories of V. In the aspect of semantics,"Vshangqu"has the meaning of"displacement from downside to upside"from initiation, to"displacement from beyond to proximity", to"displacement in abstract space", and finally"abstract meaning". Its meaning of space vanishes as its grammaticalization becomes more and more obvious. The thesis also constitutes a rule of distinguishing the phrases of different meaning with a same verb. Besides, it investigates the pragmatic functions of the sentences with"Vshangqu", which can be divided into narrating, evaluating and conjecturing.Chapterâ…¡investigates the phrase of"Vqilai"from the aspects of syntax, semantics and pragmatics. It shows that"Vqilai"is more developed and widely used compared with"Vshanqu".Chapterâ…£focuses on the comparison of"Kan shangqu"/"Kan qilai"and"Ting shangqu"/"Ting qilai", searching for the interchange mechanisms of these two pairs of phrases. It also tries to expound the differences from a cognitive view.
