the Qing vernacular novel "Hong Lou Meng" deserves a very high literary value in the history of Chinese literature. Its language which has displayed the the basic outlook of northern Mandarin development of the eighteenth century can be described as a model of modern Chinese. The langugae also shows the transition from Modern Chinese stage to Contemporary Chinese stage."Hong Lou Meng" has gone through the hands of two author. Cao Xueqin had done first 80 chapters and Gao Er had made the latter 40 chapters. The paper aims at analyzing the verb redulication in first 80 chapters by Mr. Cao Xueqin. The specific formats ,the grammatical functions, the grammatical meanings of verbal redulication in this period were discussed and compared with the verbal reduplication in other modern works. This paper is divided into the following sections:The first part is preface, which introduced the value of this thesis, the contemporary research situation of verbs reduplication, as well as a brief introduction of research in this paper.In second part, the auther exhaustively sorted out the verbs reduplication in the first 80 chapters of "Hong Lou Meng", and grouped them into seven kinds of formats, namely"AA,A了A,AA儿,A─A,A─A儿,A了─A,A宾─A", and then explained the grammatical functions by example in every section and discussed the"儿"and"─"in the formats of verbal redulication . In addition, the auther analyzed several verb formats which are easily mistaken for the formats of verbal reduplication..In third part, the auther exhaustively sorted out four formats verbs reduplication which are"ABAB,AABB,AAB,AAB儿"in the first 80 chapter of "Hong Lou Meng", and explained the grammatical functions by examples.In fourth part, the auther classified and analyzed the grammatical meanings of the verbal reduplication in the first 80 chapter of "Hong Lou Meng". Considering the findings on current academic-style semantics for the verbal reduplication, the author also exclusively analyzed and explained the grammatical meanings. The paper concluded that in the first 80 chapter of "Hong Lou Meng" the verbal reduplication can be expressed not only as an action with short duration and less frequency, but also as continuance and repetition of an action. This conclusion is similar with the research of the grammatical functions in Modern Chinese.In fifth part, the author detected the trace of development and changes of the verbal reduplication, with the results of predecessors.In sixth part, the author drew a conclusion and summarized the formats of verbal redulication in the first 80 chapter of "Hong Lou Meng" in order to demonstrate"Hong Lou Meng"has played such an important role in the development of language.
