Except indicating geographical locations and reflecting natural features, geographical name corresponding to living environment where a certain ethnic group lives contains the information of living and proliferating, movement imprint, production activity, social history, and custom et al for a nation. Therefore, geographical name is compared to the recorded file which people passed down by public praising, the living fossil for investigating humanities language and social history in a certain region, the historical materials about development of a certain region, and the witness of social history and cultural heritage.Inner Mongolia, which is located in the northern frontier of china, is saturated with plateau. Forested areas, pasturing areas, and harsh deserts occupy the whole autonomous region throughout from east to west, and the broad pasturing areas in which are Chinese well-known pastures. Inner Mongolia is a habitation for multi-ethnic integration, which includes Han, Hui and Tibetan nationalities with emphasis on Mongol nationality. Mongol nationality has a long history and splendid culture, they are different from other nations in terms of their Mongolian language, cultural psychology, social history, and custom, the title manners, connotative meanings and features of its geographical name has its own particular ethnic flavor.In this paper, the author takes religions and geographical names in Inner Mongolia for example, and makes a preliminary discussion on interactions between Buddhism and Inner Mongolia geographical names, between Tibetan Buddhism and Inner Mongolia geographical names, between Christianity and Inner Mongolia geographical names, between Islamism and Inner Mongolia geographical names, between Taoism and Inner Mongolia geographical names, and between other civil religions and Inner Mongolia geographical names, as well as linguistic and cultural characteristics of Inner Mongolia geographical names. |
