A Linguistic And Cultural Research Of Geographical Names In Daye

As a tool for social communication,geographical name is a symbolic system that refers to certain geographical entity and is also the result of a certain social group’s understanding of nature and society during a particular time.Geographical name is not only a linguistic phenomenon but also a cultural phenomenon.It is of great research value and practical significance to study its linguistic features and cultural connotations.This paper takes the geographical names of the settlements as well as administrative districts in Daye city as the research objects,and aiming at investigating them from the perspectives of linguistics and culture.The article consists of five chapters.The first chapter is the introduction.Firstly,it introduces the geographical overview and historical evolution of Daye.Secondly,it explains the source of the corpus written in this paper,then analyzes the research objectives,methods and significance of the article.Finally,it summarizes the research results on geographical names at home and abroad and Daye.The second chapter is the analysis of the naming method.It first defines geographical names and its attributes,then explains the results of classification research of it,and investigates the naming methods of Daye geographical names from the following six perspectives:natural landscape,geographical location,natural resources,humane landscape,family names and historical facts and legends.The third chapter is a linguistic study of Daye’s geographical names,mainly about phonetics,vocabulary and rhetoric.The study of phonetics includes the syllable structure and tonal patterns;from the aspects of generic terms and specific terms to study the lexical features of it,and intentionally focuses on analyzing the grammar structure of specific terms;combining with specific examples to study the rhetoric methods of Daye’s geographical names,includeing metaphor,borrowing,using,homophonic and so on.The fourth chapter explores the culture of geographical names of Daye from three perspectives:locality,nationality and times.By introducing some historical stories,historical figures and various folk tales related to geographical names to analyzes the regional cultural,national cultural psychology and cultural of different times in Daye.The last chapter is the conclusion.Summarizes the basic content of the full text and points out the shortcomings of the writing with a view to further research.
