Japan had a long history of learning Chinese culture, so that some Chinese elements retained in Japanese. However, it is unknown that how the Chinese teaching happened and developed in Japan.Up to now, the Sino-Japanese scholars had focused on the study of the modern history of Chinese teaching in Japan, but the research in ancient history was still in the blank. I will look for clues in all kinds of books to explore the development of Chinese teaching in ancient Japan.From 7000 years ago, there might be a small number of Chinese residents entered Japanese archipelago successively. To 5th century BC, many residents of Chinese mainland and Korean peninsula migrated to Japan, which made Japanese society changed rapidly. The changes were caused by the culture importation that companied by the spread of Chinese language.The 5th century, Chinese teaching emerged in the royal court as the sinology's subsidiary. The 7th century AD, it was carried out in Daxueliao, the state university of Japan. It developed a lot in the teaching of Chinese characters,reading,pronunciation and writing. With the arrival of the 10th century, Japanese began to read Chinese with Japanese pronunciation, because of the recession of the Sino-Japanese communication and the maturity of the Japanese kana system. Daxueliao was abolished at the end of the 12th century. During the next 4 centuries, Chinese teaching was carrying on in many ways, and was disseminated gradually, but it was limited to the character learning and classics reading.The Chinese teaching had two development directions. One is the traditional Chinese teaching attached to the sinology; the other is the specialized Chinese teaching, that is, Tanghua education. And Tangtongshi wrote specialized text books and created language teaching methods, which showed the unique state of Chinese teaching.The development of Chinese teaching in Japan is a result of different needs. At present, though the cause of teaching Chinese as a second language and Chinese international promotion is thriving, we still should pay close attention to the changes in the world situation as well as the learners' needs, so as to adjust strategies to enable the smooth development of the cause of Chinese teaching.
